Flatbed vs. Wheel-Lift Towing: Which Is Right for You?

Understanding Your Towing Options

When you need a tow, you might not think much about the type of truck that shows up — but the method used can make a significant difference to your vehicle's health.

Flatbed Towing

A flatbed tow truck uses a hydraulic platform that tilts and lowers to the ground. Your vehicle drives or is winched onto the flat surface, and all four wheels are lifted completely off the ground during transport.

Best for:

  • AWD and 4WD vehicles (prevents drivetrain damage)
  • Luxury and exotic cars
  • Classic and collector vehicles
  • Vehicles with low clearance
  • Vehicles that can't be put in neutral

Advantages: Maximum vehicle protection, no extra wear on tires or drivetrain, works for non-running vehicles.

Our flatbed towing service uses Ram 5500 trucks capable of loading any passenger vehicle safely and securely.

Wheel-Lift Towing

A wheel-lift tow truck uses a metal yoke that goes under the front or rear wheels, lifting one end of the vehicle off the ground. The other two wheels remain on the road.

Best for:

  • Short-distance towing
  • Standard front-wheel drive vehicles
  • Quick repo or impound jobs

Disadvantages: Not recommended for AWD/4WD, may cause transmission or drivetrain issues if done incorrectly.
